I flew into San Diego for the weekend. Our main thing for the weekend was to go to the Cal/UCLA game at UCLA. Once we got to the airport, the night was still young, so my brother and I decided to go to a casino at one of the indian casinos about 40 minutes north of San Diego. It was a tough night. I couldn't win anything and it was no fun at night. I didn't know that this was only a precursor to what would happen. So, after the casino, we decided that it doesn't make sense to drive 40 minutes south to San Diego, sleep, then drive back up to the rose bowl. Since we were already pretty far up north we decided to take advantage of the fact that there was zero traffic and we were still awake, so we decided to just head up to LA and find some place to crash. Well, we did find a place to crash afterall. Driving up north, there was hardly any cars out there. On the 5 North, we were approaching the place where it splits into the 405/5 North. All of a sudden, I see debris in the road. At first it was small pieces of glass and then I noticed that the pieces just got larger. So, there I was trying to dodge the debris, afraid that something is going to pop the tires. In an instant, I look up and I'm staring down at the broadside of a Mercedes that was turned perpendicular at us with no lights on. Given that the light from the headlights don't go that far, I had little time to react and we hit a car going freeway speeds. Next thing I know, I hit the airbags, the other airbags fall all around us, we start spinning. Eventually we came to a stop, but cars were still whizzing by. I tried to turn on the lights, hazard lights at least, but nothing came on. With no way of signalling other drivers we were there, we were sitting ducks. Someone is going to hit us, like we hit that mercedes. I told my brother to keep his seat belt on while we braced for another hit. Thankfully, no one hit us after that. In fact, a semi stopped next to us. It honked its loud horn to warn other drivers that are passing by. Afterwards, it went into reverse on the freeway in such a way that any traffic that goes around the semi will go around us as well. It also used its lights to illuminate the entire area. My brother called 911 and we waited until someone told us it was OK to get out.
Above was pics of the car when we went to pick up our stuff at the tow yard. What I can guess what happened was that mercedes was involved in an earlier accident just a few minutes before. We were just the ones that happened to be first on the scene and that's why there was no warning, no police already on the scene. I was amazed my brother and I walked away from the crash with just some sore muscles and stiff necks. I thank God for that fact. On top of that, Cal lost. |
